Apathy? the hell with that

Apathy = Lack of interest and enthusiasm


They say you can get bored to the point of screaming. My experience is that when you’ve reached that point you’re at such an advanced stage of apathy that the thought of screaming is inconceivable. The sort of effort involved would usually be far too much effort for a mind that’s running like a gumboot-wearing slug through treacle. This is the point where even small movements become difficult. I call it the Point of Critical Blah.


People who have reached the Point of Critical Blah can suffer some serious "albeit muted" internal conflict. Such a state of being can be mistakenly associated with boredom, but there is an important difference between apathy and boredom. If you’re apathetic, you’re devoid of energy and don’t wish to do anything. If you’re bored, you don’t wish to do anything but you have energy and use it to go around looking for things you don’t want to do. In fact boredom can be quite accurately referred to as aggressive apathy. It’s everywhere.


Every day, people all over the world are reaching the Point of Critical Blah. Their limbs are becoming jellied, their brains frozen, and the tiny voice insisting that they should do something is a faint whisper in the bog of their minds. At this rate, the human race won’t be marching into the future … we’ll be oozing.
